Dear Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners,

My Name is [your name] and I live at [zipcode]. I am deeply concerned and shocked about the recent proposed changes to our oil and gas regulations.

Save The Aurora Reservoir has been pushing for 1-mile setbacks from our existing and adjudicated reservoirs. The proposed regulations use “carve outs” that completely emasculate the one mile setback, therefore compromising our precious water resources. We are not asking for anything new; 1-mile setbacks are stated in the City of Aurora’s Oil and Gas Manual and their operator lease agreements. The City of Aurora prioritizes protecting their reservoirs, yet Arapahoe County clearly does not.

Similar “carve outs” for the setbacks from our homes, schools and recreation areas also jeopardize the health, safety and welfare of our residents and children.

The County of Arapahoe has an express duty to be a steward of the Public Trust and must “carry out their duties for the benefit of the people of Arapahoe County”. It is obvious to us that the County has chosen to make this “compromise” to cater to an existing Oil and Gas applicant.

As stated by one County Commissioner in their closing comments at the Moratorium Hearing, “At this moment in time – this is a time for us to put Arapahoe county in a position to have the strongest local oil and gas regulations in the state and possibly the nation. We can and should be the example for other communities…”. We ask that the Commissioners honor their word and duty and be that example by adopting 1-mile setbacks from our reservoirs, homes, schools and recreation areas.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
