About Us

Save The Aurora Reservoir (STAR) is a non-profit organization on a mission to protect the Aurora Reservoir and its surrounding communities.

History

The organization was formed in 2022 in response to the Lowry Ranch comprehensive area plan (CAP), a proposed hydraulic fracturing project encompassing the Aurora Reservoir and surrounding land. As of February 2023, we are a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Colorado. Our long-term vision is to protect against all types of industrial developments that pose a risk to the reservoir and its adjacent communities.

Accomplishments

Thanks to grassroots efforts organized and funded by concerned residents, STAR has:

  • Successfully advocated for a blanket setback that prevents oil and gas drilling within 3,000 feet of occupied structures and within one mile of existing and planned reservoirs in Arapahoe County.
  • Garnered the support of U.S. Congressman Jason Crow, who subsequently issued a press release and contacted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regarding our concerns.
  • Coordinated the commitment of Cherry Creek School District NOT to lease mineral rights for fracking under local schools.

Compiled research and key data points from nationally recognized experts to educate policymakers and the public.

Developed strong partnerships with local environmental justice organizations, wildlife habitat groups, and elected officials.

Identified and reached out to impacted communities through bilingual educational materials, canvassing events, and more.
